Community alarm services are also known as Lifeline, Careline or emergency monitoring services. They operate 24 hours a day 365 days a year giving elderly and vulnerable people the freedom to live life independently knowing that assistance can be obtained when needed. Community Alarms work via a special alarm unit connected to the telephone line. The alarm unit has a built in button, which is pressed to obtain assistance, alternatively the alarm can be activated by a pendant which is worn around the neck or on a wrist band. The range of the pendant allows use around the house and garden. Alarm calls from older people are responded to by trained operators who will contact family or emergency services as necessary. Some alarm monitoring services also provide a visiting response as well. Emergency or community care alarms can often be provided together with other telecare equipment such as falls monitors and flood detectors.
