What does it do?

For all too many older people health problems, or loss of mobility or confidence means they can become housebound and consequently somewhat socially isolated. The Befriending service offers a "companion" to visit on a regular basis to provide encouragement to help people re-establish social links or just to help break the loneliness if that is what is wanted.

The service is for housebound older people over fifty who have very little or no social contact with family or friends.
A volunteer will work with each person in a variety of ways which include:

  • Home visits for a friendly chat and general companionship
  • Sometimes sharing interest of hobbies
  • Accompanying the person on short outings such as walks or a visit to the local shops.
  • Plus much more.

This year we have also introduced a telephone conference "link ups" for individuals and groups.

The regular contact provides reassurance that somebody is in contact and cares.
