What does it do?The Walk Out Well (WOW50) Project is run from Age Concern North Yorkshire's Harrogate office. It provides an opportunity for local people to engage in physical activity, social contact and access to information and support, safely and with qualified supervision.
The scheme has over 400 walkers who meet regularly to participate in short walks around the Harrogate, Knaresborough and Ripon areas with a maximum of 34 on each occasion. Longer walks are available around Harewood and Bolton Abbey and are always popular.
Regular training courses are held for walk leaders and new walks have been extended into Nidderdale, Starbeck and the Jennyfields area of Harrogate. Many walkers wear pedometers to monitor their own progress and the project as a whole has strong links with the Harrogate Heart Support Group, the Diabetic Clinic at Harrogate hospital and the local leisure services staff.
The scheme has gone from strength to strength with existing walkers and volunteer walk leaders showing a strong commitment to the project, together with increased participants on all the walks.
