A name initially introduced from the United States to describe a form of 'housing with care' designed for older people, and now adopted by a number of housing developers for both the private and rental markets. There is unfortunately no single definition. Our Glossary explanation of 'Extra care housing' will apply to most Assisted living developments, but some also have features of 'Close care housing', that is, access to the services of a nearby care home.
Use our Search for retirement housing to find assisted living schemes in your locality. Search by postcode, place name or county/council area, and select 'Extra care' from the Support dropdown list.
