A name initially introduced from the United States to describe a form of 'housing with care' designed for older people, and now adopted by a number of housing developers for both the private and rental markets. There is unfortunately no single definition. Our Glossary explanation of 'Extra care housing' will apply to most Assisted living developments, but some also have features of 'Close care housing', that is, access to the services of a nearby care home.
