Almshouses

Definition: Local charitable trusts that provide affordable housing for older people in need

Almshouses are independent local charitable trusts that provide affordable housing for older people in need. Most are for older people living in a specific geographical area or connected with a particular trade. They are administered by a body of voluntary Trustees.

The Almshouse Association advises and supports the trustees of a large number of Almshouse Charities.
