Show more "Portland House is a Housing with Care Scheme for eight older people with dementia. Developed in partnership with St Helens Social Services and Villages Community Housing, it was a recipient of the 2004 award for ‘Housing Achievement of the Year’ from The Municipal Journal magazine. Portland House has also been taken up by the Department of Health as a model of best practice. Like MHA’s other specialist dementia services, it owes its person-centred approach not only to MHA’s guiding ethos but also to recommendations developed by Professor Tom Kitwood.

Members of staff work to maintain tenants’ skills and delay or prevent admission to residential or nursing care, and in order to encourage an individual’s sense of self carers get to know a person’s life history. Comparing work at Portland House with previous jobs, one staff member commented: “It’s so different here. We don’t take anything away from people, they can be as independent as possible – it’s great.”" Show less
