Show more "The Chestnuts sheltered scheme provides housing for 35 older people aged 55+. The scheme transferred to C&C from another housing association in 2010.
The Chestnuts is on the site of an old manor house that was destroyed by fire in the 1970s. The new main block, which opened in the early 1980s, was built around the façade of the original house, an attractive building in keeping with this pleasant residential street.
The block has 27 self-contained studio flats and three one-bedroom flats, set over three floors. A further eight, characterful, one-bedroom flats are situated in converted stables and servants’ quarters that date back to the 18th century.
In 2012, a restoration transformed the interior of the scheme. The project involved a collaboration between scheme managers, contractors and our residents, who together proposed and introduced a package of improvements to the scheme.
The project team installed open plan kitchens, and our residents chose the colours, work surfaces and different unit options. A new plastic floor was laid in each flat to combat noise caused by the previous creaking floors.
The work made a huge different to the scheme - in fact, the Chestnuts' residents were so happy with the result that they laid on a Christmas dinner for all contractors involved in the project." Show less
