It is Midlothian's newest care home, opened in May 2008. It was designed after careful consideration and advice from many different agencies, including the Dementia Centre at the University of Stirling. It has been designed to fit in with Midlothian's traditional 'village' style and consists of single-storey buildings linked by corridors or streets.Each room compromises a larger than standard room with en suite and tea making facilities, and also 1 double room in each wing where couples can live. All rooms have a door out to a secure garden and residents have their own patio area where they can put a chair or some potted plants. The outside doors are open during the day but are centrally locked at night for security.
Next to Newbyres Village, but not part of it, there are 10 specially designed houses for older people. These houses are equipped with the latest technology to help tenants enjoy a more independent lifestyle and look after themselves in their own home but with assistance available at the touch of a button if needed.
