“"With just over six months to go before it opens, Bridgend County Borough’s first Extra Care housing scheme has been named.

The purpose-built complex in Kenfig Hill, which will provide high-quality specialist homes for 70 older people in 40 units, will be known as Llys Ton.

The name was one of a number of suggestions put forward by local school pupils and voted on following a series of community meetings last summer.

The literal translation of Llys Ton is Wave Court but Ton also refers to a hill in the local area. Community feedback suggested that local residents felt it was important to retain the word Ton in the new name.

Councillor Lyn Morgan, BCBC’s Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, said: “I’d like to thank everyone in the community who helped choose the name. Llys Ton is very fitting.

“I’m especially pleased that we have retained an element of Troed y Ton, which was the name of the former residential care home on the same site. I think it’s a sensible and sensitive name which will be associated with an exciting and modern facility.”

The new £5m Extra Care scheme is being funded by the council, Valleys To Coast Housing (V2C) and the Welsh Assembly Government, who have awarded it a social housing grant.

Work to build the complex has been progressing well and the new scheme is on course to open in autumn 2011.

Councillor Morgan added: “Extra Care is the future of adult social care services in the UK so it’s encouraging to see Llys Ton taking shape and know that we will soon be able to offer a local, innovative and alternative option for living independently into old age.”"

"This development is our first extra-care project for Bridgend-based Valleys-to-Coast Housing Association. Located in Kenfig Hill, it replaces an out-dated residential home for the elderly with 39 flats, together with extensive, state-of-the-art communal facilities; and has been designed to achieve a BREEAM “Excellent” rating. Organised around an east-facing courtyard garden, the communal accommodation is orientated to promote passive solar gain and natural ventilation via its central, south-facing, double-height restaurant/activities space. In these and other ways we have endeavoured to fuse our people-centred architecture with common-sense sustainability, to produce an extra-care architecture that responds to its users and to its site in equal measure."
