Disability equipment suppliers are organisations and companies that provide daily living aids, mobility equipment, and special equipment for disability. Disability aids and equipment can be directly purchased, hired, or obtained through Occupational Therapists. There are a large number of disability aid suppliers and mobility aid companies, and many specialise in particular types, for example there are dedicated stair lift suppliers. Mobility equipment is varied, and mobility aid suppliers provide equipment such as stair lifts, walking sticks, walking frames, Zimmer frames, buggies, mobility scooters, vehicles, manual and electric wheelchairs. Such mobility products can assist elderly disabled people to move about within and outside their home. Disability aid suppliers provide an extensive range of daily living aids designed to help older people with disabilities manage at home. There are personal care aids and equipment to help with dressing, toileting, bathing, and eating and drinking. These daily living aids include commodes, raised toilet seats, hand rails, bathroom aids such as bath seats, shower stools, bath boards, bath rails, eating aids like adapted cutlery and crockery, slip mats for plates, and dressing aids like dressing sticks, and zip pullers. There is various bed and seating equipment including mattress overlays, seat cushions and lumbar support cushions, bed rails, bed tables, special chairs, and hip protectors. Communication aids and equipment are extensive and include telephones with a call indicator light or large buttons, vibrating alarms, flashing light doorbells, Induction Loops, computing equipment aids, hearing aids, talking clocks, and talking watches. Household equipment is also very extensive and includes walking trolleys, height adjustable tables, long handled dustpans & brushes, pill dispensers, tap turners, key turners, electric plug handles, kettle tippers, key safes, easy grip kitchen and garden tools, and various other disability gadgets. These products for people with disabilities are manufactured by commercial disability aid companies, and can be accessed directly via the internet. It is however better for older people to first have a needs assessment undertaken by a qualified Occupational Therapist, or at least arrange a demonstration of the equipment before purchasing anything. Disabled Living Centres may be able to arrange a demonstration, and the Assist UK has a Directory of Disabled Living Centres. If you’re unable to find the right product for you on the market, a charity called Remap might be able to help. They have an extensive network of volunteers provide unique pieces of special tailor-made equipment and given free to the people who need them. The Disabled Living Foundation (DLF) has a Directory of manufacturers or suppliers of daily living equipment which are sometimes called aids for daily living, disability aids or mobility products.
