Mental ill health, particularly depression, memory loss and dementia can affect many elderly people. Depression can be caused by bereavement or retirement, and may be alleviated by adopting a healthy lifestyle, activities, and companionship. Older people who have an infection or have just had an operation may be confused or disorientated for a period of time. Not all mental health problems can be treated, but they can be managed or prevented. Dementia is caused most commonly by Alzheimer’s Disease and there is no cure, however people with dementia and their carers can be helped. There are dementia care and support services, such as specialist day centres, carers services, and NHS mental health services for older people.
