Gateshead CouncilShopping Service

What does it do?Gateshead Council offers a shopping service for older people who find it difficult to get to the shops due to a disability or as a result of being housebound.

The service helps you to keep your independence by making sure you can still access all of the goods sold at supermarkets and in other local stores when you are not able to go yourself.

Who it is for:

older people in Gateshead

Where it is available:

Local service covering: Gateshead (Tyne and Wear).

What it costs:

As from April 2009 the delivery charge will be £5.45 per delivery. This is subject to change but we will always notify our customers if the charge alters in any way. Charges are collected at the same time as paying for your groceries and can be paid in cash or by cheque.

How to access or apply for it:

Contac Adult Social Care Direct as above

What to expect then:

We will need to do an assessment to see if you can get the service, but after that it’s really easy to use.

Additional information:

We can help with many small tasks (like changing a light bulb) but if you’re not sure whether we can do something please ask us - we’ll always try our best!

Some of the larger stores also offer hot cooked foodstuffs that we may be able to collect and deliver to you with your shopping. Just ask the shopping service operator about this if you are interested.
