Eye Buddy Scheme

What does it do?

A trained volunteer visits a blind or partially sighted person in their home either on a regular basis. Tasks that a person with vision loss may find difficult, reading mail, dealing with bills, writing letters, perhaps a walk to the local shops. Another frequent request is for companionship to ease loneliness and isolation, just a cup of tea and a chat.

Many visually impaired people are unable to go out because of their sight loss and appreciate getting out of the house by being taken out for short visits to the shops, the park or the river.

Additional information:

Anyone can be a volunteer. All we ask is the commitment to visit a client once a week, or sometimes once a fortnight, on a regular basis. Volunteers will be asked by the Volunteer Co-ordinator what they would like to do, taking into consideration, area, travel arrangements, interests, likes and dislikes etc. Volunteers can visit during the day, evenings or weekends. After an informal chat with a Volunteer Co-ordinator and completion of application forms, a blind awareness training session will be offered. Continuous support is available for volunteers by the Co-ordinator. Volunteers are always accompanied by the Co-ordinator on their first visit to their client. Reimbursement of travel expenses is offered to volunteers when visiting their clients.
