Liverpool City CouncilAdapting your home

What does it do?If you, or a member of your family, are having difficulty getting around your home due to a physical disability, sensory impairment or old age, you can request an assessment for equipment and adaptations to make it easier for you to live independently.

Liverpool Disabled Living Centre offers free independent information, assessment and advice on equipment that can improve your independence and safety to Liverpool residents.

The centre does not sell equipment, but it will give you an idea of the type of equipment that may help you. The centre is just one of the services provided by Liverpool Lifehouse, a partnership between the council and Liverpool Primary Care Trust. For more information about this service, visit the Liverpool Lifehouse website www.liverpoollifehouse.org

Who it is for:

You must be a permanent Liverpool resident, live in your own home and have a
disability which:
  • Has lasted or is likely to last for at least 12 months and has no prospect of significant improvement.
  • Significantly affects your ability to carry out the activities of daily living in the home, or imposes a burden on your carer or family.

Where it is available:

Local service covering: Liverpool (Merseyside).

What it costs:

The assessment and advice is free and some items of equipment and adaptations are also free. However, if your assessment suggests that you need extensive adaptations which are not funded by supported living, they may be subject to a means test. You will be advised of this during your assessment.

You may also be entitled to a Disabled Facilities Grant to help with costs for adapting your home.
