Home Safety Visits

What does it do?

Fire Service personnel will come to your home to give you advice on fire safety in the home, actions you can take to reduce the risk of fire, and discuss escape routes should fire occur.
As part of the visit we may identify that you need smoke alarms fitting in your home if you don’t already have them, or that existing faulty alarms need replacing.

Who it is for?

Some community groups may still qualify for a free smoke alarm (see attached public guidance notes). These community groups are:

  • Persons aged 60 and above
  • Persons with visual or hearing impairment
  • Persons living alone
  • Persons living in social housing
  • Persons with physical or mental impairment Persons in receipt of benefits
  • Persons living in non traditional accommodation e.g. caravans houseboats
  • Single parent families

Where it is available?

Local service (Hambleton, Harrogate, Craven, Richmondshire, Ryedale, Scarborough, Selby).

What it costs:

While government funds are available, North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service will install smoke alarms free of charge, however in the future we may request a donation of £10 to cover the cost of the alarm and installation. When you contact North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service to request a home fire safety visit, we will inform you whether a donation may be sought.
