Open Sight

What does it do?

We offer an outreach service by our Independent Living team. We offer you a low vision equipment assessment and benefits guidance. We will demonstrate various resources, such as magnifiers and give you the help and support you need.

Open Sight’s Independent Living Team makes most of their visits in your own home. This is not just because we believe you’ll feel more comfortable there, but so that we can judge how light, height of surfaces, carpeting and many other factors influences your surroundings and what we can suggest to make improvements.
We are an independent charitable organisation who is bound by the laws of data protection, therefore we will only record our visit with your express permission and that you can obtain a copy of our notes at any time. Our visiting officer will read to you the notes they have made. These are usually about your sight condition and the sort of things we can do to broaden your access to the things you want to do; we call this enablement.

Our visit may include:
Understanding your sight condition and how it effects you
We’ll check how much light is available in your property
A demonstration of resources to meet your needs
Advice upon or making a Disability Living Allowance application
Advice upon or making an Attendance Allowance application
Advocacy, especially if you have lost your job unfairly
We will give you one of our helpful information packs
If we haven’t got the answer, we know someone who has
A cup of tea!
