 | What does it do?The Handyperson service, which will be provided by the Care and Repair team at Black Country Housing Group (BCHG), is a government-funded programme aimed at helping people to remain safe, secure and independent.
The reliable and responsive service is designed to cover a wide range of small household repairs – whether it’s fixing a leaky tap or fitting a fire alarm, through to replacing unsafe floorboards or cleaning out guttering.
BCHG’s Care and Repair team was selected by Wolverhampton City Council to provide the Handyperson service following its strong track record of delivering the initiative in Sandwell. Last year, the team’s work in the borough won praise when it was awarded a commendation for Excellence in Delivering Handyperson services by Foundations, the Government’s agency for Home Improvement Agencies.
Councillor Les Pugh, Cabinet Member for Adults at Wolverhampton City Council, said “Research has proved that handyperson services can help prevent slips, trips and falls, make people feel safer in their own home and improve their health and well-being.
“For many people, it’s also a friendly face and a way to help vulnerable people access other services they need.”
Commenting on the importance of the new service for Wolverhampton, Lesa Kingham, Head of Care and Repair at BCHG, added: “It’s often difficult for people to know who to turn to when they have a small repair job and sometimes the most minor property ‘niggle’ can become a real worry.
“The Handyperson service is a free and responsive service for vulnerable people to get small repairs done around the home.”
