What it costs:

Home Care, Personal Budgets and Direct Payments

Personal budgets are an amount of money that the council has agreed you will need to pay for your home care, as identified in your support plan, following a social care assessment.

A personal budget can be a combination of your own and the local authority’s money. Once the amount has been agreed, your personal budget can be used flexibly, as long as it meets the outcomes identified in your assessment, and the support listed in your care plan.

You can have your personal budget paid directly to you as a Direct Payment, or directly to your chosen care provider. This means you can organise, buy and manage all your agreed support for yourself with the benefit of easy payment options. You can even opt to have a combination of both of these options, so that the local authority manages part of your personal budget and you manage the other part.

Contributing to the cost of Support

Personal budgets are means tested and contributions to it may be exclusively from your local authority, from you directly, or a combination of both. These contributions are determined according to your financial circumstances – your savings, income and regular financial commitments. The local authority carry out a Financial and Benefits Assessment, this will let you know what, if any contribution you would need to make towards your personal budget. This assessment will also make sure that you are left with enough money to meet your normal living expenses.
