What’s the difference between retirement housing, assisted living and extra care housing?

Retirement housing provides flats or bungalows designed for older people in a setting that usually includes some shared facilities, such as a residents’ lounge, guest suite for visitors, garden and laundry. Properties will be fitted with emergency alarms to summon assistance in case of need, and usually there will be a Manager on site (full or part time) whose duties include offering practical support to residents if asked.

In assisted living and extra care sheltered housing developments the Manger’s role extends to helping organise personal care services if required, and in extra care particularly, there may even be care staff based on site full time. The precise combination of services available, and the way these are paid for, depends on the individual provider (management company or landlord). Our aim in HousingCare.org is to present sufficient information about what is available in each development to enable you to compare them and select what meets your requirements.
