Now in its 15th year, this national art competition continues to encourage and celebrate the talents of elderly people. Selected and award-winning entries are exhibited at a central London art gallery.

1,500 to 2,000 entries are received from a wide range of amateur artists submitting works of arts in a variety of mediums, including watercolour, pencil, charcoal, collage, pastel, acrylic, textiles, enamel, photography and sculpture. Artists’ age range form 60 to over 90 years of age. In 2008 the oldest prize winner was 88.

Entries come from amateur artists working from home, from retirement and sheltered housing schemes, as well as from care homes and day centres, demonstrating the popularity of creative activities in retirement throughout society.

One essential achievement of the EAC art awards cannot be shown at the annual exhibition, and that is the enjoyment it gives to the participants. The satisfaction of being engaged with art and developing ones own skills is really what enhance the quality of life of each amateur artist.

This amateur artists’ annual competition offers many sponsorship opportunities to businesses and organisations involved in elderly care, retirement housing and other services for elderly people. The EAC art awards could not have developed this far without the dedicated support of Earnley Concourse, Peverel, Retirement Plus and others.
