'HOOP' returns

07/07/2012

After an absence of a few months, our 'HOOP' tool has returned to the HousingCare and FirstStop websites.

Named initially after the project through which it was created ('Housing Options for Older People'), the short versions of the tool are also known (confusingly) by different titles - How well does your home suit you? in print, and now Housing information for older people in the new online version. No matter! In all its forms 'HOOP' is a tool designed to help older people think about their home, how well it works for them, how to tackle any problems and whether also to consider moving home.

In the online version, suggestions are made automatically in response to any problems HOOP users identify. If these aren't enough, users can sign up and ask for further suggestions from an EAC FirstStop Advisor.

Although extremely simple, HOOP was road tested again by a group of older volunteers at the start of a thorough review led by its creator Frances Heywood. Many small changes have been made in response to our volunteers' suggestions as well as to take advantage of the new information resources now available on our websites. Of particular relevance is the EAC Home Services Directory, which HOOP is able to refer to as a source of detailed information on Home Improvement Agencies, local Age UKs and Age Concerns, day centres and clubs, volunteering, and many more opportunities.

The new simple name Housing information for older people was also proposed by Frances and her volunteers, who felt this better reflected the purpose of the tool.
