The Abbeyfield Society has provided housing, companionship and support for older people since 1956. In both supported sheltered houses and care homes the ethos of promoting personal dignity and independence underpins our service.

In 2003 Abbeyfield UK, a professional housing management operation, was launched as a subsidiary of The Abbeyfield Society to protect Abbeyfield's future and that of the older people we support. At the end of 2005 almost 2500 residents are living in 196 supported sheltered houses and 19 care homes managed by Abbeyfield UK.

Today the 785 Abbeyfield houses across the UK are home to more than 8000 older people.

Abbeyfield houses provide the privacy and security many older people seek when managing alone in their own home has become a burden. They come and go as they please, receive visitors and enjoy meals provided by the House staff. They are free from the worries of maintaining a house and garden, paying bills and dealing with loneliness. At the centre of these homely houses are Abbeyfield house managers, who are employed to ensure that the house is comfortable and safe, and that meals are nutritious and enjoyable.

Abbeyfield care homes provide 24-hour personal care for residents who are too frail to live in an Abbeyfield house. Staff care for residents under the supervision of a professional manager. Always dedicated to providing the highest quality services, staff and volunteers are working to ensure they exceed the standards set by government in the document Care Homes for Older People. Some homes also provide special facilities for the care of people with dementia.
